This is a fun English resource that engages students with their visit to The Model Village, Godshill. The resource task enables them to engage with the local dialect (linked to at the model village’s ‘Nammet Hut’), and to work out what these local dialect words may mean.
The task encourages students to learn about language aspects of the area they are visiting, in terms of social history and culture.
Students could complete the resource as an introduction to interesting aspects of the Isle of Wight, its language, social history and culture.
Students could complete the resource whilst having lunch at ‘The Nammet Hut’ and links could then be made between the name of the cafe and the Isle of Wight dialect.
Completion of the resource after the visit would be a fun follow-up task to compound any learning about language, culture or social history discovered during their visit to the Isle of Wight. „ Students could find out more about the origins of the dialect.
Students will demonstrate their ability to find meaning in language. They will show that they have understood what dialect is and how it varies from region to region within the UK.
