During their ferry crossing students will experience the effects of forces and their effects on the motion of the Red Funnel ferry. Whilst on the ferry, students will be able to draw force diagrams to represent their ferry journey. They can go on to calculate the resultant force and direction of travel.
This resource is for students at key stage 4 and relates to the ‘Motion and Forces’ part of the Science National Curriculum, focusing on the use of force diagrams to represent the forces acting on the ferry.
The tasks link to their journey on board the Red Funnel vehicle ferry. The task requires students to draw force diagrams with labelled force arrows.
Students will draw force diagrams to represent balanced and unbalanced forces. They will calculate resultant force and direction of movement. Students will plan an investigation to determine how hull shape affects the movement of a boat through water.
