This task enables students to practise their understanding of chronology, using dates and events that link specifically to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
This task enables students to practise their understanding of chronology, using dates and events that link specifically to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. The task is relevant to students in key stages 1, 2 and 3.
Questions have been chosen because they link with core History skills as required at these key stages.
The skills used in completing the task should be introduced before the visit to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, in class, to ensure understanding of chronology and historical dates, etc. Students could practise ranking themselves in order of birthdays, for example.
An understanding of the general history of transport and its development would also be useful preparation for this task.
When on site, students will be able to undertake the task elements and can practise their chronological understanding.
The task is ideally completed on-site, to allow for the completion of all questions.

The skills needed for the task should be discussed in class prior to the trip so students are aware of the information they need to discover, how to place items in chronological order, etc.

Follow-up tasks could include whole class discussion about the responses to the questions, groups presenting back their collated ideas to the class or compounding learning by developing further skills, using more challenging questions
Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of chronology by specifically demonstrating their abilities in practice, by finding, interpreting, synthesising and presenting the required information.
