This resource is for students in upper key stage 2 and key stage 3, and it relates to the aspects of the National Curriculum that focus on developing an understanding of techniques, using these and evaluating them, then ultimately producing a creative response.
The task links to specific aspects of the tree-climbing environment, notably Appley Park and the landscape there. This resource has pre- visit, on-site and post-visit elements. It is expected that teachers could complete this work as a stand-alone project as part of their trip to the Isle of Wight and Goodleaf Tree Climbing.
Students will need to research landscape artists and their use of form, style and composition prior to their visit.
The on-site part of the resource (sketching based on their chosen composition or style) is designed to be completed during the trip to Goodleaf, whilst students wait for their tree-climb, or after its completion.
Back in the classroom (or accommodation, if appropriate) students will use their sketches to craft a creative response based on their chosen style or artist.
The post-visit aspects of the task enable students to consolidate their research and planning .
Key Skills Practised
Evaluating and analysing the work of artists
Creating sketches to record observations
Developing creative ideas
Producing a creative response to the park, based on an established style or technique
Students complete their research into tree and landscape artists, noting down any styles, techniques or compositions they appreciate.
During the Visit
Students complete their sketches using aspects of Appley park they are interested in.
Why not complete this resource on a day trip?
The Isle of Wight can be reached in as little as 12 minutes! If you're located close to the south coast then a day trip is easily achievable...
This resource could be completed as part of the following day trip:
Treetop Treat! from £21.50pp
A unique adventurous activity with a difference! Professionally trained tree climbers will help your students ascend a huge oak overlooking The Solent.
Completion in class of students’ creative artwork inspired by trees or landscape in Appley Park.
Students will have developed a knowledge and understanding of artists’ work in relation to trees and landscapes, becoming more critical. They will have experimented with, and used techniques of their choosing to represent the landscape at Appley Park. Students will produce their piece of transitional artwork inspired by their research and based on their sketches undertaken at the park before or after their Goodleaf climb.
