This is PSHE resource that encourages children to interact with the environment on a Red Funnel Ferry. Pupils have to imagine that they have been employed by Red Funnel to produce a piece of promotional material (of their choice) to demonstrate the company’s commitment to safety.
This is a PSHE resource that encourages children to interact with the safety aspects of the environment on a Red Funnel Ferry. Students
in upper key stage 2 imagine that they have been employed as an inspector to carry out an audit of the safe working practices of Red Funnel and the task will therefore provide them with an understanding of risk management. Lower key stage 2 students will identify the safety features they see around them; all students record what they see. Students in key stage 3 have to imagine that they have been employed by Red Funnel to produce a piece of promotional material (of their choice) to demonstrate the company’s commitment to safety.
Prior to their visit, teachers and children will discuss the concept
of risk and emphasise the fact that we all have the responsibility to keep ourselves safe. This will then extend to the notion of corporate responsibility and discussions can take place with regard to how risks need to be identified and managed by a commercial company.
Students can then be presented with the resource sheet before arriving at the Red Funnel Port. (For key stage 3, share Red Funnel’s statement: “Safety is Red Funnel’s first priority...” Explain that they have to find evidence on board the ship (and at the port) that this statements is true. )
All students will be encouraged to use their skills of observation to
identify any procedures/notices/safe working practices that Red
Funnel employ to ensure the safety of its customers. Emphasis will
need to be placed on the fact that a company is duty bound to keep
its customers and staff safe. It is suggested that students have access
to cameras for this task so that they have the ability to photograph the
safety features which they recognise, e.g. special clothing; markings on
the floor; signs on board the vessel; lifeboats and physical equipment
etc. In addition to what can be seen, students should also be
encouraged to listen to safety announcements and record key elements which pertain to safety.
By carrying out this exercise, students will also be taking the responsibility to keep themselves informed/aware of any procedures which are advisable in the event of an emergency.
On return to school, students will need to report their findings. For key stage 2, this will be done in the form of a collage (ideal for lower key stage or low ability), presentation (enhancing speaking skills) or in the format of a report/letter (enhancing written skills). Key stage 3 students will produce some promotional material which emphasises Red Funnel’s commitment to safety.

Students complete the PSHE resource linked to this teacher note, recording images and completing their table

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the measures which need to be taken in order to alleviate risk. They will demonstrate their understanding of corporate responsibility. They will understand the importance of evidencing a statement (key stage 3).
