Students identify physical and human features in their local area, then compare these with those they see on their ferry trip.
This is a 3-part set of Place Knowledge resources focusing on identifying Physical and Human Features of the local area in comparison to the area around Southampton Water. The pre-visit activity reinforces understanding of geographical features in general, local features in particular and provides preparation for the visit. The on-site activity, to be used while on board a Red Funnel Vehicle Ferry, uses this preparation to aid detailed recognition and recording of as many new features as possible. The post-visit activity encourages in- depth discussion of differences between regions in the UK.
The resources help students to engage with the topographical features of the UK’s South-West coastal region from Southampton Harbour
via Southampton Water and the Solent to East Cowes on the Isle
of Wight. It enables students to develop their skills in recognising geographical features at home as well as elsewhere; it promotes the use of directional language and geographical vocabulary in context and under field work conditions.
The resources will require children to re-cap their understanding of Physical and Human Features, basic skills in using and understanding maps and applying this knowledge to a new location.
This will include locating features on the journey and ticking them on a table as well as the opportunity to follow-up by discussing the differences between their Local Area and Southampton Water.
Working in pairs, there is an opportunity to use key vocabulary and practise practical co-operation and team work.

Students will re-cap Geographical concepts of Physical and Human features, use of maps and will become familiar with applying key concepts and vocabulary in a new context.
During the Visit
Students will apply knowledge & understanding of Geographical concepts of Physical and Human features under fieldwork conditions; use prepared sheets to record features of the new location; use of locational & directional language; use of observational, communication and co-operational skills.
Students can re-inforce learning by comparing the information collected on the field trip to their knowledge of their Local Area. They have the opportunity to discuss differences/similarities and write a resume of their findings. This can be presented, compared and evaluated as a whole class activity.
Students will demonstrate and develop their understanding of Geographical Physical and Human Features of their Local Area in comparison to a new location. Students will demonstrate & develop use of directional and geographical key vocabulary. Students will practise co-operation skills.
