Students learn about coastal erosion, focusing particularly on how chines are formed.
They will practise using 4-figure grid references and will also learn how to explain a geographical process with clarity, and put this in writing.
The resource task enables students to develop their knowledge of coastal erosion; promotes the use of mapping skills; encourages use of geographical vocabulary and requires them to use directional language in context.
This resource will require students to learn about erosion (a link to
a BBC learning clip is listed on the lesson plan to introduce/refresh knowledge on this topic). Following this, they will learn how a chine is formed (due to erosion) and that there are a number of chines on the Isle of Wight. Using an OS map, they will find Isle of Wight chines and provide 4-figure grid references to pin-point their location. They could then use compass directions to say where these chines are, in relation to a map of the Island.
Students will find out that an Isle of Wight Visitor’s Centre requires them to produce a poster about Isle of Wight Chines. On this poster, they will need to inform visitors where to find chines (using a map, 4-figure grid references and directional language); they will then provide an explanation as to how chines are created, due to the process of erosion (a learning clip is attached which provides a structured format for explaining coastal erosion as a process).
In the plenary, students could compare each other’s information posters, focusing on effective layout and use of information.

Use 4-figure grid references.
Pupils will learn about erosion and become familiar with key vocabulary relating to this topic. The resource could be completed at this stage if desired by teachers - this would allow for exploration of the Island’s chines during the subsequent visit.
