The resource allows students who visit Isle of Wight Steam Railway to engage with the health and safety aspects of this environment, by identifying risks, asking and answering questions, and thinking about their own responses to potential danger.
This resource is for upper key stage 2 students who are covering health and safety and identifying risks in certain situations as part of Personal, Social & Health Education on the 2014 National Curriculum.
Before the visit, students will need to know about health and safety as a concept and why it is is important to everyone’s everyday lives. Discussions about the railway environment and potential hazards may be useful.

Teachers could engage the students in many follow-up tasks, including: Class discussion of their overall findings at Isle of Wight Steam Railway; Completion of a ‘health and safety project’ that incorporates their school or other local environs
Students will be able to transfer this knowledge and these skills to other everyday situations and enviroment to ensure they interact safely with their surroundings.
