Primary Field Studies

Choose from options including Bonchurch Futures - a citizenship activity which challenges students to consider the future of an old-fashioned village such as Bonchurch and how they can help to shape it as it adapts to the 21st century. Or Bay and Beach, which explores the natural environment along the coast where geography comes alive. The leaders and coaches will highlight points of interest along the route and help students identify the flora and fauna they will encounter, the geology of the area, how erosion influences the coastline and how it is managed.

East Dene Rock Pools sees students head down to the rocky shore at low tide for some rockpooling. Knowledgeable tutors will be on hand to show students how to pick up crabs safely. An emphasis is placed on the hands-on experiences of observation and identification, and how marine animals and plants adapt to the hostile environment in which they live.

The Minibeast Safari leads students armed with pooters, nets and ID keys exploring the habitats of bugs and insects in and around a woodland area which has areas specifically managed to attract certain creatures. Students can collect their own minibeast for identification and discussion.

Finally the Woodland Habitat Trail leads students around the 10 acre site of East Dene where they can explore and study a range of habitats, flora and fauna in safety. They will explore the local forest where they will learn about plant history and use, and the wildlife that is all around them.
